With hundreds of beautiful temples to choose from, it can sometimes be hard to know which to visit. Well, Wat Kaeo Korawaram may not be the most famous temple in Thailand, but it’s easy-to-reach location right in the heart of Krabi town means that it merits a visit.
Rising gently above the streets of Krabi Town, not far from the mud crabs sculpture, Wat Kaeo Korawaram is a traditional temple (that doesn’t require a donation to visit, though donations are always appreciated) where time slows down and you can easily forget that you’re in the heart of a busy touristic region.

History of Wat Kaeo Korawaram
Built in 1887, Wat Kaeo Korawaram is one of the most important Buddhist temples in Krabi Province. This is a popular temple to visit and we even saw a wedding photo shoot happening during our visit (though signs clearly indicate at the entrance that professional shoots aren’t permitted!)
Its elevated position makes it both physically and spiritually prominent and the white ordination hall (known as ubosot in Thai) is actually visible from several points around town.

The Ordination Hall
The star of the complex is the Ordination Hall, which stands at the highest point. As is custom, be sure to remove any shoes and hats before visiting and cover up your shoulders and knees.
When travelling around Thailand I always made sure to have a shawl handy in my bag for this very reason! You’ll also want to make sure to keep your voice down and refrain from talking whenever possible. After all, while you’re here to admire the beauty of the architecture, many of the locals are here to worship.
Wander inside and you’ll find a serene Buddha image presiding over the hall, surrounded by murals that depict scenes from the life of the Buddha. The space is rather small but ornately decorated and fresh offerings are often placed in front of the golden image of the Buddha.

How to visit Wat Kaeo Korawaram
There are a few ways to reach the temple. As we had our own car rental, we parked in the temple parking (just inside the gates) but if you’re approaching on foot, then you’ll find the entrance to the temple much more impressive!
For, in order to reach the main hall, which gleams white against the tropical sky, you’ll have to climb a short staircase adorned with golden Naga serpents. Once at the top you’re rewarded with views over the town and onto the river beyond before you make your way into the main hall.
Visit in the morning and you’ll probably spy monks going about their daily routines. We personally opted to visit during the late afternoon when the light is at its best and we could also check out the nearby Black Crab Night Market.
Although, unlike the Tiger Cave Temple, this isn’t a must-see in the Krabi region, I did appreciate that we were the only tourists at the temple and if you’re already in Krabi town, then it’s definitely worth a look.
