As a destination which feels like an island, is studded with stunning beaches and full of unique wildlife, it’s no surprise that Railay Beach has been gaining incredible popularity in recent years. This stunning, secluded peninsula is only accessible by boat, boasting towering limestone peaks, white, plush sands and turquoise waters. What and where is Railay Beach?
Railay Beach is a small peninsula located in Krabi Province in southern Thailand, along the stunning Andaman coast. It sits just around the corner from Ao Nang.
While Railay Beach is technically part of the mainland, it’s cut off by limestone peaks, and so can only be accessed via boat. The beach itself is split into Railay East and Railay West, which are conveniently linked by a fifteen-minute pedestrian-only walkway. The walk between the two is flat, well-paved, and it’s very possible to walk it in sandals!

Getting to Railay Beach
Getting to Railay Beach is an adventure in itself, thanks to the fact that the only way to get here is by boat! Although technically part of the mainland, the iconic towering limestone peaks and dense jungle foliage actually make road access to the beach near impossible. And so, you’ll have to arrive by longtail boat.
Boats operate regularly from Ao Nang or Ao Nam Mao, and so you don’t need to worry about booking in advance, as you can usually purchase a ticket on the day. A ticket typically costs ฿100–฿200 one-way, and the boat takes around 20 minutes.

Best things to do at Railay Beach
There are several things to do at Railay Beach apart from the obvious. Of course, you can relax on the beach if you so wish (just be sure to come equipped with plenty of suncream and water), but there are also a few activities that merit your attention, especially if you love nature and beautiful viewpoints!

Visit the beach
It’s not just one stretch of sand; in fact, there are three beaches, each with its own vibe.
Railay beach: The first beach that you’ll likely visit, as it’s where the boat docks. This beach offers calmer waters, ideal for swimming, and tends to be a little quieter as it’s away from the water sports, but rather the parking dock for the longtail boats. Follow along the small path that connects to Phra Nang Cave Beach, and you’ll reach the start of the path for the Viewpoint Trail.

Tonsai Beach: Just a short walk from Railay Beach is a stretch of sand that offers a completely different vibe, with a main focus on rock climbing. Tonsai Beach feels a bit more rugged thanks to the craggy limestone cliffs that surround it, along with a handful of spots to sunbathe, and paths leading into more jungle-like areas so you can wander around and spy out the local wildlife.
Phra Nang Cave Beach: This iconic postcard-perfect beach is most famous for its towering limestone cliffs that sit out in the water, soft, plush white sand, and the sacred Princess Cave tucked at its edge. This beach is probably where you’ll head for water sports-related activities, and there are several small cafés and stalls selling refreshments or light bites to eat.

Rock Climbing
One of the more popular activities to do in the secluded peninsula is to climb the surrounding rock faces. The area boasts several limestone karst cliffs and over 700 bolted routes, all from which you can soak up stunning views from the top!
Described as a rock climbing mecca, there are routes for all kinds of skill levels, so even if you’re a beginner, there are plenty of climbing paths to be enjoyed. I recommend booking your session in advance, particularly during peak seasons (November to April). You can book a half-day rock climbing tour like this one, or a full-day adventure tour like this one.
Alternatively, you can book on the day by visiting one of the many climbing shops at Railay East. But, if it’s busy, you may not get a spot or have to wait quite a while, as it’s done on a first come first serve basis in person.
Princess Cave
Phra Nang Cave, or Princess Cave as it’s sometimes shown on maps, is a sacred place where fishermen and boatmen still make offerings to ensure a safe journey. Found within the cave are incense, flowers, and more surprisingly…a rather large collection of phallic symbols/wooden penises (lingams).
Yes, you read that right. While it might seem quite odd, these Shiva Lingams are believed to bring fertility, vitality, and prosperity. In fact, some locals believe that a princess resides in the cave here, and so when their wishes for safe passage or prayers are fulfilled, they return with carved phalluses to show gratitude and encourage continued good luck.
The Viewpoint Trail
For those who love a challenge or simply enjoy stunning views, the Viewpoint Trail is an absolute must! The path is divided into two sections, so you can choose between a gradual ascent that’s easier on the legs or opt for a steeper, more direct climb that rewards you quickly with sweeping views.
The total elevation of the route is only around 90 to 100 meters, and so it only takes around 20 minutes one-way, possibly quicker if you’re a fast hiker! Though it’s worth noting that it’s considered a challenging route. The climb is steep, rugged, and parts of the trail are rope-assisted, so be sure to be prepared with sensible footwear and plenty of water. At the top, you can expect breathtaking views overlooking Railay East and West beaches, dense jungle landscape, and sparkling turquoise waters.
Caves at Railay Beach
Railay Beach is dotted with several fascinating caves, each offering its own unique charm and sense of adventure. Of course, there’s the Princess Cave, known for its striking stalactites and plentiful phallic offerings!
But tucked along the limestone cliffs are even more caves that are easily missed unless you search for them. You can take a longtail boat to Bat Cave, where you can peep inside dark, narrow passageways, and even see a small, dark chamber that houses a colony of bats. Another cave of note is that of Diamond Cave, which shelters remarkable rock formations. Beyond this, there are a number of smaller, lesser-known caves to spy out too.

Spot the Dusky Leaf Monkeys
If you’re lucky enough, you may well see the small and playful, albeit funny-looking monkeys that call the cliffs and beaches here home. The Dusky Leaf Monkey, also known as the spectacled langur or the spectacled leaf monkey, is most fascinating for the fact that they are born with brilliant, bright orange fur that darkens to grey-brown within six months.
Upon seeing one, you’ll notice that the light patches around their eyes somewhat resemble a pair of glasses, giving them a unique spectacled appearance! They have quite a hefty leaf-based appetite, so you’ll spy them up above in the trees, munching away.

See Macaques
The most popular monkeys to see in Thailand, particularly near coastal areas, are the long-tailed macaques. Mischievous and cheeky, you’ll likely have heard of stories of them stealing food, pinching phones and being downright menaces to tourists passing by. However, their playful character and adorable ways only further add to the charm of Railay Beach and its surroundings.
Note of caution, as with all the local wildlife, be sure not to approach them and just leave them be. It’s fine to snap photographs and enjoy watching them, but anything more and you risk putting yourself and potentially others at harm. One more important thing to remember is that direct eye contact can make the monkeys feel threatened, so avoid staring at them and keep at a relaxed distance.

Look out for monitor lizards
Other really cool wildlife to look out for are monitor lizards, which have a similar appearance but are much smaller and less venomous than Komodo dragons. In fact, you’ll spot Asian water monitor lizards the way you’d spot squirrels in any city park, casually and completely at home, entirely unfazed by people.
However, do be really cautious and don’t approach the monitor lizards as they can bite! More or less, they will leave you be, but just avoid going too close; it’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to a species that has direct roots belonging to the genus Varanus family (i.e dragons!)

Kayaking
All kinds of water sports are available in the area, but kayaking is by far one of the most popular. In fact, there are several options for kayak and canoe rentals, and unlike many other activities, it’s often easy to just show up and book on the day.
For a particularly unique experience, especially if you’re staying nearby, you should opt for this Illuminated Clear Kayak Night Tour, where you can experience the bioluminescent plankton glowing in the water below. Not to mention the stars lighting up the night sky!
Take a boat ride
If you’re looking for a laid-back trip, then one of the best ways to explore Railay and its surrounding beaches is to do it by water. While you may arrive by boat, taking one out to explore the area offers a completely different perspective of Railay’s towering rock formations, hidden coves, and sparkling blue waters.
Whether you book a boat tour to take you around or hire one to take you at your own pace, it’s the perfect opportunity to swim, snorkel, or simply drift beneath the unique limestone cliffs and natural surroundings that make Railay Beach such a stunning spot to visit.

Where to stay at Railay Beach
Thanks to how beautiful this area of Krabi is, it is also incredibly touristy and ever busy, meaning one of the best ways to experience the beach and its surroundings with the fewest number of tourists around is to stay within the vicinity. Here are a few suggestions of where to stay (based on web reviews):
Railay Phutawan Resort – This laid-back resort is a little further out, around a 13 minute walk from the main Railay Beach. However, what it does offer is a peaceful retreat into jungle foliage, rustic rooms, and an outdoor pool, and breakfast is included. Check prices and availability here.
Railay Great View Resort & Spa – Bordered by dense jungle and turquoise seafronts, this hotel sits just a 7-minute walk from Railay Beach. Colourful rooms and an on-site restaurant serving traditional Thai dishes and Mediterranean cuisine. Guests have commented on it being basic, but the perfect location. Check prices and availability here.
It has to be said, there are a lot of hotels and accommodations I looked at that have varying reviews. While the location and surrounding area seem to be highly positive, more or less, the places to stay in this area are pretty basic with few amenities. So, be sure to check reviews on both Google and Booking.com (or whichever platform you use) thoroughly!
