Nestled in the heart of Cinque Terre lies the picturesque village of Manarola. Characterised by its pastel houses that cling to the dramatic cliff face, in the shadow of landscaped terraces which have been hewn out by humans over many centuries. The town is rich with history and vibrant with colour, here’s an insider’s guide to the best things to do in Manarola, as well as top tips and where to stay!

Manarola

Where is Manarola?

Manarola is one of the five towns of Italy’s Cinque Terre, located on the coastline of northern Italy. It is a small town built on the craggy cliffside, approximately 70 meters above sea level. Cinque Terre is within the territory of the Republic of Genoa.

Manarola is the second smallest village in Cinque Terre (the smallest being Corniglia) and has a population of just under 400 residents. That being said, the population numbers certainly swell during the summer months when people flock to the region from all corners of the world to enjoy gorgeous views, crystal clear waters, and delicious Italian food.

What is Manarola known for?

Manarola is best known for its primary industries, fishing and wine-making. It is home to Cinq Terre’s famed wine called Sciacchetrà. The local wine, typically white and sweet like a dessert wine, is renowned for its heritage and how it was produced.

It is also believed that Manarola is the oldest settlement to have been inhabited within Cinque Terre, with evidence of San Lorenzo Church’s cornerstone dating back to 1338.

Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre translates as ‘five lands’ and is located on the Ligurian coastline in northwestern Italy; it is the oldest and smallest National Park in Italy. The region is comprised of five towns, all of which are unique in character.

The five different settlements are: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

In 1997, Cinque Terre was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a “cultural landscape”. The agricultural activities and practices carried out by human hands working harmoniously alongside nature are what makes this pocket of the world so special.

How long do you need to visit?

Truth be told, you only really need 2 days to visit all five villages of Cinque Terre. All of the settlements are pretty small and, of course, you’ll likely want to spend longer soaking up the sunshine and relaxing, but to see everything you don’t need much time at all.

The five villages are connected via hiking paths, the Cinque Terre train, and boat rides. Most people prefer to discover the five villages hiking along the main mountain trail, which offers great opportunities to get to know the locals and appreciated their culture more intimately.

Stroll around the village

Like with all of the Cinque Terre towns, the best way to discover Manarola is to simply stroll around and allow the town to reveal itself to you. Each of the towns is filled with ‘caruggi,’ narrow passageways which translates to ‘alley’ in English.

Church of San Lorenzo

Dating back to 1338, the charming stone church is built in Gothic and Baroque styles and decorated with beautiful frescoes. The church is a short but steep, 10-minute walk up from Manarola’s marina area.

Wine tasting

One of the best experiences to have while visiting this part of Italy is to taste the region! Cinque Terre is special in that it has practiced viticulture (wine-growing) for centuries. In fact, the whole region is covered in terraced vineyards that stretch across the craggy landscape.

The most famous wine from Cinque Terre is the sweet dessert wine, Sciacchetrà. There’s truly no better way to understand the importance of the wine making heritage than taking a guided tour at one of the vineyards in the area. And, of course, it would be rude not to sample a glass or two!

Cinque Terre’s wine is designated specifically to its region. Predominantly producing white wine, they typically use the grape varieties of: bosco, vermentino, and albarola. To be certified as a Cinque Terre wine, it must contain at least 40% bosco, which is the grape variety primarily grown in Liguira.

Dine with a view!

Of course, one of the best things about visiting Italy has to be the food! Simple, delicious and heartwarming, you’re never short of places to find traditional cuisine to indulge in. And, in Manarola you’re spoilt with the scenery too. Here are some of the top suggestions (based on web-reviews) of where to eat:

  • Focacceria A piè de Campu – Serves vegan dishes, this is a romantic spot to dine under the vine covered terrace and enjoy the romantic ambience.
  • Cappun Magru – People have called this the most charming restaurant in Manarola. Everything prepared and served is locally sourced. All homemade and traditional mouthwatering Italian cuisine.

Be sure to try Pesto alla Genovese when visiting Cinque Terre, no trip is complete without sampling this delicious regional sauce!

Where to go swimming in Manarola

Every village has its own place to go swimming and Manarola is no different. In Manarola there is no beach, however at the marina area there are smooth rocks which you can lie down on to sunbathe. This is the most popular spot for swimming and it’s free, just be sure to bring your own towel!

You’ll also find that there are several ladders leading down to the water that are located along the rocks, so it’s easy to access for dip. That being said, if you want to venture further around the coastline, there are several access points to the water which you can go to.

One of the best ways to view Manarola has to be from the water, whether its going for a dip or by boat, the vibrant village looming above the sparkling blue sea is truly magical!
