Is The Shard worth visiting?

If you’re looking for an fun and memorable experience then yes, absolutely! It’s got different view points and the higher you get, the more you’ll feel surprised and amazed by its breathtaking views. This iconic landmark has become a piece of history and exploring it won’t disappoint.

A brief history of The Shard

Designed by architect Renzo Piano, this mesmerising structure was built with the intentions of it being similar to that of a ‘vertical city’, containing all the characteristics and luxuries that come with it. The building compromises of office spaces, a 5-star hotel, private residencies, three floors of restaurants and a stunning panoramic views of London, The Shard really has it all!

Not so popular with everyone at the start, this iconic glass structure was once criticised as being “a shard of glass through the heart of historic London”, nonetheless The Shard has been a big hit since its debut in 2013, welcoming a whopping 900,000 visitors annually.

It stretches 310 meters high into the sky and consists of 72 different floors.

How to visit and does it cost?

You have to purchase a ticket to visit the Shard, and the admission prices starts from £25. Tickets are subject to availability, it’s definitely recommend to book in advance if you know you want to visit (especially for sunrise or sunset views) but you can always risk it and try on the day if you are undecided till the day. Buy your tickets in advance here.

The Shard tends to be busier at the weekends and during school holidays, and remember if you are going during colder months, definitely bring a jacket for the open air viewing balcony!

Entrance to the Shard

Upon your arrival you will see a gift shop with the usual tourist merchandise, you’ll also be greeted by a photographer who will take a snapshot for you as a small souvenir of your visit.

After the initial entrance, you will be subject to an airport style screening for security purposes (as standard practice per most attractions in London) and once through will be given a digital guide and shown to the elevators. The digital guide offers informative information about the construction as well as additional information about the views.

Level 69

Visitors begin their journey through the glass structure at level 69 (also worth mentioning the elevator took 60 seconds from floor 1 to there, impressive right?) to the Main Viewing Platform, which is the indoor version.

From here you will be stunned by panoramic views, with interactive telescopes available to peek through too. Visitors will see the city from a height that is almost twice the height of any other viewing platform in London.

There’s the option to add a glass of bubbles to your ticket price, so if you’re feeling fancy and wanting to treat yourself, what better place to sip on bubbles than with a view to die for!

The best is yet to come though…

Level 72

The Open Air Skydeck on level 72 is the best experience, you’re literally in the sky with the clouds! Exposed to the natural forces, it’s recommended to try and book your trip with weather in mind. That being said, The Shard offer a free return on your visit if weather conditions are that bad (this is subject to their terms and conditions).

Offering breathtaking panoramic views, on a clear day you can see over 40 miles!

Because of its sheer height, the viewing balcony allows you to experience London in a quieter way, high up from the hustle and bustle of the capital city. Undisturbed and unrivalled views make this part of visiting The Shard absolutely worth it.

The Shard is a memorable visit, but alternatively you’re looking for a great view of London at a cheaper price, then I totally recommend a visit to the Monument of London. Nearby, you’ll also find the Sky Garden at the top of the Walkie Talkie building. The view from the Sky Garden is also free, though you’ll have to book a time slot to visit in advance!

  1. Hi Sophie,
It may be worth mentioning that you can enjoy the view from the Shard if you take a different entrance and go up to one of the restaurants. No entrance fee. Only a dress code that does not allow sneakers. Buy a cup of coffee and enjoy the view.
