Is the Winchester Christmas Market worth it?
Winchester, as a city, is a charming and cosy place to visit come the winter season. As for its Christmas market, it regularly ranks as one of the UK’s best Christmas markets on any given list. But is it worth it?
In terms of festive cheer, overall atmosphere and the simply stunning setting, I would say yes! The market here is full of Christmassy charm, delicious smells and wonderful gifts. The only thing worth noting (like all Christmas markets these days) the food and drink on sale is fairly pricey.

When is the best time to visit?
The market is open from 10 am – 6 pm every day (till 8 pm on Fridays & Saturdays). It is completely free to visit and wander around. If you want to avoid the crowds, I suggest visiting during the early week, as this will be a little quieter. For the most convivial atmosphere, visit between Thursday and Saturday.
In terms of time of the day, I recommend visiting after dark as this is when Winchester Cathedral is lit up and glows as the majestic backdrop to the market. This, and the fact that you’ll have the best vision when it comes to seeing the steam waft off the huge cauldrons of mulled wine!
Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market
Overall, there are around 120 quaint wooden chalets that decorate Winchester Cathedral’s grounds. Most of the stalls sell handcrafted decorations, and there’s a wide variety of food and drink on offer.
Copper cauldrons of mulled wine
The most unique and quirky thing to be enjoyed at Winchester’s Christmas market is the huge steaming copper cauldrons of mulled wine. The metal vats are so big that someone has to stand on a stall and stir from above with a wooden spoon!
The price is £8.50 for a small cup and £13 for a large, so you’re definitely paying for the spectacle rather than the drink itself. Sadly, they don’t have a mug deposit scheme at this market, so you’re served the mulled wine in paper cups.

Food & drink
Food options are plentiful, and there are all the usual festive favourites found in the traditional German-style Christmas markets. From sizzling bratwurst to warm, gooey raclette and several flavours of chocolate kisses.
One notable British food found here is the Yorkshire pudding wrap. This dish originated in the 1700s but, over recent years, has enjoyed a surge in popularity. It’s essentially a roast dinner with gravy, trimmings and all, wrapped in the delicious golden batter of a Yorkshire pudding.
Gift chalets
By way of gifts, Winchester Cathedral’s Christmas Market has a good range of local sellers selling handcrafted treasures, local produce and the like. There are also some stalls selling the typical mass-produced goods generally found in the German-style markets of the UK.
Winchester Cathedral
Winchester Cathedral which sits as the majestic backdrop for the city’s Christmas market, is one of the city’s most important and recognised historical landmarks. Famed throughout, it also has the longest nave and overall length of all Gothic cathedrals in Europe, if not the world!
While the current building was erected during the 11th century, Winchester has had a cathedral since 642 AD. One of the ecclesial building’s more peculiar features is the abstract design of the West Window. At the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, Cromwell’s forces purposely smashed the great stained glass windows.
With the restoration of the Monarch just under twenty years later, the pieces were randomly gathered up and used to create an abstract pattern. The interior of Winchester Cathedral was also used for filming in Dan Brown’s, the Da Vinci Code and also Netflix’s hit show The Crown.
There is an entry fee to visit Winchester Cathedral, the regular adult admission is £13.50 (or £12.50 if booked online).
Other festive activities in Winchester
There’s not loads to do in terms of other festive events in Winchester as the main focus really is at its Christmas market. But, here are just a few extra suggestions of what you can expect to see in the wintertime:

Guided Christmas Walk with Mulled Wine
Love history? And mulled wine? Come the festive season, visitors can uncover the history surrounding England’s capital of Christmas with a warming mulled wine in hand. The tour finishes at the Christmas market. Book the tour now.

The Brooks is a large retail and leisure complex in the heart of the city. It is home to several high-street favourites as well as a few independent shops. During the period leading up to Christmas day, most of the shops here are open till 7 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols
This event is happening on the 19th of December (2024) from 4 pm to 4:30 pm. A small concert where the favourite choral works of Benjamin Britten, an English composer and conductor, are sung by the Winchester Cathedral Choir, accompanied by harpist Elizabeth Green.

Light trail at Marwell Zoo
Situated a 20-minute drive from Winchester’s city centre is Marwell Zoo. During the festive season Marwell put on an event called ‘Glow Marwell’, where on selected dates from the end of November to the end of December, visitors can explore the grounds after dark.
This event is especially aimed at younger children. But, please be aware that this is just a light trail and you won’t see animals when visiting for this event.
