One of the most breathtaking places to visit in Biarritz is the Rocher de la Vierge (Rock of the Virgin), which is conveniently located in the heart of town and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Here’s how to visit le Rocher de la Vierge, as well as what to know before you go.

What is the Rocher de la Vierge?

The Rock of the Virgin or ‘Holy Rock’ is a particularly unique natural phenomenon located on the fringes of Biarritz in South West France, not far from the border with Spain. The town of Biarritz itself is situated in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

The strangely shaped rock, which looks like a long ship’s hull, is located between the Port-Vieux (Old Port) and the Port des pêcheurs (fishermen’s port) and is topped with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The story goes that on one particularly stormy evening in the 19th-century, a group of fishermen who were hunting whales were returning towards the port when the seas became particularly rough.

Fearing that they were in their last moments, a divine light suddenly appeared at the top of what is now known as the Rocher de la Vierge, leading the fishermen home. Once they were safe and sound, they installed the Virgin Mary statue atop of the rock.

A wooden footbridge was installed to link the rock to the mainland. In 1886, at the behest of Napoleon, a 76 metre long iron footbridge to link the rock and mainland Biarritz was commissioned. This very same bridge is used by hundreds of visitors on a daily basis today.

Local legend often tells that the bridge was commissioned by Gustave Eiffel (the man behind the Eiffel Tower). However, in reality this isn’t true and the bridge was instead designed by the company Schryver et Cie.

The Rocher de la Vierge is located just a stone’s throw away from the Villa Belza, a late 19th-century neo-medieval mansion that’s perched on the fringes of town and has since become emblematic of Biarritz.

The closest road leading down to the rock is that which leads to Musée de la Mer, an Art Deco building which was constructed around the same time period as Biarritz’s Casino. The walk takes around 5 and is a little steep but is fairly well paved.

There are a few parking spaces at the top of the entryway which are reserved for those with reduced mobility. The tourist train also stops outside of the entrance, as does a bus.

Be sure to keep a particularly strong hold on your phone when crossing the bridge as the gaps between the planks mean that a dropped phone could easily slip through them and into the crashing waves below and never seen again!

One of the best things to know before visiting the Holy Rock is that it is free to visit. The rock is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The only time you can’t visit is during particularly bad storms, when the site becomes dangerous to visit and so is closed to the public.

The Rocher is also a particularly beautiful place from which to enjoy the sunset. We made sure to arrive at the site more than fifteen minutes before the official time of sunset so that we could find a good place to sit, admire the view, and take photos! This is such a must-see in Biarritz that I have even included a sunset stop at the rock in my one day in Biarritz itinerary.

The placement of the rock means that, on the one side, you can see views of the Grande Plage of Biarritz, while on the other you can see the Basque Coast. On a clear day, you can see as far away as the Pyrénées and the Spanish coastline.

During Christmas time, the pathway leading up to the rocks are often illuminated with beautiful Christmas lights, leading to a particularly interesting display. For more inspiration, be sure to check out our French Basque Country itinerary.
