Home to a handful of Bavarian style chalets and lying in the shadow of the illustrious Saint Michel Fountain, one of the more beautiful Christmas Markets in Paris is that which is held in Place Saint Michel, just a stone’s throw away from the River Seine. Here’s how to visit the Place Saint Michel Christmas Market, as well as what to know before you go.
2024 Place Saint Michel market dates: mid November – early January dates TBC
Place Saint Michel Christmas Market
There have previously been iterations of this Christmas Market, though previous versions have seen the market stalls situated within white tents, similar to those found at a French brocante. This year has seen wooden chalets installed, which certainly give more of a Christmas vibe!
Unlike many Christmas Markets in Europe, the market actually carries on a bit into the New Year, meaning that you can visit after Christmas if you have an early January visit to Paris. Much like almost every market, the event is undoubtedly more magical come nightfall when the entire square is bathed in twinkling lights.
This market has a focus on food, though gifts are also for sale. During our visit, some of the treats we saw for sale included fudge, artisanal cheeses, and , crêpes, and the traditional Alsacian tartiflette) and hot vin chaud (mulled wine). Gifts for sale include jewellery and other accessories.
How to visit the market
As you might imagine, the market is much busier during the weekends and in the evenings, particularly as Christmas day draws ever near. The quietest time is in the morning during the weekdays. Although most stalls now accept card, it’s always a good idea to have some cash ready for small purchases.
When wandering through any big crowd in Paris, be sure to keep your valuables close by at all times (I personally use a crossbody bag to ensure maximum security). For more tips, check out our guide on how to not get your phone stolen in Paris.
This Christmas Market is conveniently located close to a number of attractions that you should make sure to check out while in the city centre. This includes Shakespeare and Company (the most famous English language bookshop in Paris) and Notre Dame Cathedral (which is currently set to reopen at the end of 2024).
If you want to do other festive activities in Paris then it’s worth noting that there are plenty of festive things to do in Paris. Notre Dame has its very own Christmas Market which is usually held on the Parvis Notre Dame. However, due to the reparation works on Notre Dame, the market is currently taking place on Square René Viviani.
