Introducing Le Marais: The Heart of Medieval Paris
A Parisian arrondissement which covers much of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements of the city, Le Marais is so-called thanks to its status as a swamp prior to the Middle Ages. You see, once upon a time, this area of the French capital was a marshy uninhabitable patch of land filled with bogs.
As a result of an ever-increasing city population, a group of monks drained the land and expansion of Paris’ limits soon followed.
Over time, the medieval streets of Le Marais stretched over the course of a fairly large area, resulting in a maze of cobbled lanes and old shop fronts. Indeed the oldest stone house in Paris still standing can be found in Le Marais in the form of Auberge Nicolas Flamel.
During the 16th, 17th, and 18th-centuries, this also happened to be the area of Paris where many of the city’s more wealthy residents chose to build their mansion houses. Today, many of these historic houses have been transformed into museums and public buildings.
For example, Musée Carnavalet occupies two former Hôtels and is dedicated to the history of the city. Fast forward into the 19th-century and Le Marais luckily escaped much of the Haussmannian renovations that resulted in the grand boulevards and wide houses that are so synonymous with the city.
Visit today and you can expect to find a plethora of little streets, a vibe of Paris of old, and even a timber-framed house or two. For a closer look at this district on a more local level, check out my free and self-guided Le Marais walking tour.
