A Guide to the Best Things to do in Bastia, Corsica

Last Updated on 3rd May 2023 by Sophie Nadeau

Located in the northern portion of the beautiful island of Corisca, Bastia is an ancient town where you can meander through narrow streets which look like they’ve been plucked straight out of a history book and wander into medieval churches which have changed little in the centuries since they have been built.

Bastia itself is probably best-known for its temperate climate and historic harbour, which remains one of the most important ports on the island of Corsica to this day. Here’s your guide to the best things to do in Bastia, as well as what to know before you go.

A Guide to the Best Things to do in Bastia, Corsica

Introducing Bastia

Bastia was actually the capital of Corsica all the way up until 1791 when the Genoese dominated the island. Since 1811 the capital of Corsica has been Ajaccio, something that remains true to this day.

Today, Bastia is actually the second most populated town on Corsica and lies in the north-east of the island. Those visiting Bastia should note that it is divided into three distinctive sections; the old town, the citadel, and the old harbour.

Old Port (Vieux Port)

One of the true gems of any visit to Bastia is a visit to the old port, where you’ll find boats swaying in the gentle sea breeze and plenty of restaurants serving sea themed dishes. Tuscan style buildings lie in the shadow of Bastia’s Citadel and it’s from here where the old town stretches out in a maze of streets.

Strolling around the port will take an hour or two and it’s particularly charming to visit at golden hour when the candy hued houses surrounding the harbour are illuminated in a golden glow.

Visit the Old Town (Terra Vecchia)

One of the top things to do in Bastia is to stroll through the narrow streets and alleys of Bastia’s Old Town, known locally as Terra Vecchia, allowing your feet to guide you and getting a little lost en route.

The old town surrounds the old harbour and so is hard to miss on any trip to the area! Highlights include discovering historic buildings (so be sure to bring your camera along), picturesque squares, and ancient churches, including the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the Oratory of Saint-Roch.

Explore the Citadel

If you love getting a bird’s eye perspective of a city, then you should be sure to climb up to the Citadel, a historic fortress that stands high above the rest of the town and boasts panoramic views of Bastia and the Mediterranean Sea beyond.

The citadel was constructed between the 15th and 17th-centuries and is sometimes referred to locally as the Terra Nova. Once at the citadel (wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be on your feet all day), you can stroll along the Citadel’s ramparts and bastions, as well as snap photos of the verdant gardens.
