If you’re a non-meat eater like myself, then you’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of vegan-friendly restaurants and places to eat vegetarian in The Hague!
Picture The Hague. What do you imagine? I bet it’s diplomats, embassies, and a whole array of skyscrapers. However, what you may not know is that this Dutch city has so much more to offer. After all, The Hague is brimming with history (did you know that the Vermeer painting, The Girl With The Pearl Earring, is housed here?), an incredible foodie scene, and even its own seaside resort!

Where to eat vegetarian and vegan in The Hague
Veggies on Fire | Beeklaan 385, The Hague, Netherlands
Open from Wednesday through to Saturday, Veggies on Fire is well-known for their friendly staff, cosy decor, and impeccable food. Serving all manner of vegan fare (and an exclusively vegan menu), there’s everything from raw dishes to curries to avocado ice cream.
Foam | Frederikstraat 44, 2514 LL Den Haag
All bright lights and minimalist decor, Foam is 100% vegan and makes for the ideal lunch spot whether you’re looking for wraps, gluten-free pancakes, or quesadillas. While at Foam, be sure to order the hazelnut and espresso drink. It’s ever so delicious and you could easily sip on it all day!
This health food hotspot has been open since 2016 and can be found in the Willemspark district. In the summer months, there’s even seating to the front and a patio out back to enjoy your food in the open air. Due to the popularity of the restaurant, you may well want to reserve a table during holiday periods and weekends to ensure you get a place!

De Vegetarische Slager (The Vegetarian Butcher) | Hooikade 4, 2514 BH Den Haag
2023 update: unfortunately this restaurant is now permanently closed. For all manner of sandwiches, salads, and snacks, the Vegetarian Butcher is the place to go. Open from Tuesday through to Sunday, this restaurant is particularly popular for evening meals.
The Vegetarian Butcher brand touts itself as the ‘world’s first vegetarian butcher’ and also has a delicious selection of meat-free products available to buy in many Dutch supermarkets, as well as abroad. As such, plenty of meat-free goodies can be picked up here.
Hortus | Anna Paulownaplein 3, 2518 BK Den Haag
2023 update: unfortunately this restaurant is now permanently closed. Situated to the South of the Peace Palace, for those who are looking for more gourmet offerings, I highly recommend a visit to Hortus. Food is quirky, experimental, and the restaurant is regularly named as one of the top places to eat vegan and vegetarian in The Hague.
Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I personally would opt to visit in the evening so as to make the most of the dimly lit candlelit experience and table service. Dishes come in one size only (slightly larger than a starter size, but smaller than the size of a main course), and so it’s recommended that you order a few dishes rather than the usual one.
The cuisine we sampled included a beetroot sorbet complemented by a lavender mousse for dessert, as well as roasted pumpkin, served with chestnut cream as one of the mains.

De Vegetarische Snackbar | Stationsplein 5A, 2515 BT Den Haag
2023 update: unfortunately this restaurant is now permanently closed. Good for your wallet and incredibly tasty, De Vegetarische Snackbar is open every day of the week and can be found in the very centre of the city, not far from a supermall and several tram stops.
Filled with all manner of meat-free snacks, highlights of this vegetarian snack bar include delicious hotdogs and mouth-watering fries.
As an aside, it’s worth noting that no trip to the Netherlands should be taken without sampling a portion of fries or two. Traditionally served with a generous helping of mayonnaise, there’s no European snack quite like it (or quite as delicious!)
Hummus | Prins Hendrikstraat 60, 2518 HT Den Haag
A chain of restaurants and cafés which can also be found in locations such as Delft, Hummus serves some incredibly delicious dishes at some pretty reasonable prices. Wonderful decor and great service combine to make for the perfect lunch spot or dinner destination.
While visiting Hummus, I particularly recommend sampling the vegetarian shawarma or shakshuka (an aubergine based dish). However, when all is said and done, everything on the menu is completely delicious, and completely vegetarian…

Vegane Glorie, Douzastraat 1, 2581 RV Den Haag
One of the newer vegan restaurants to pop up in The Hague is Vegan Glorie. As its name suggests, this meat-free eatery is dedicated to all things non animal based. Highlights of the menu include Teriyaki toast and American pancakes.

Thank you so much to The Hague Marketing Bureau for organising lunch at Foam and dinner at Hortus for my boyfriend and I! All opinions, photos, and words remain our own!
