Most romantic destinations in the USA
Kauai, Hawaii
Kauai is one of the most romantic getaways in the USA. There are boundless opportunities for couples to connect on a deeper level amongst the stunningly natural landscapes.
Picture long walks along the beach at sunset with the noise of crashing waves or candlelit dinners in a tropical paradise with a soothing Ukulele playing in the background.
There are some incredible restaurants on Kauai, and many require booking a reservation several weeks in advance. So, take some time to plan a few intimate dinners before travelling and guarantee a spot at the best restaurants on the island.
Kauai is well-known for being the Garden Isle. But it is also known for being home to many chickens. You are guaranteed to be woken up in the early hours by the noise of a rooster unless you book an inside-facing room at the Grand Hyatt Kauai on the south shore. It is the perfect location for a romantic trip, such as a honeymoon or anniversary.
The ideal duration to spend in Kauai is ten days because there are so many things to do in Kauai for couples. For example, book a sunset boat cruise to the Na Pali Coast, relax on the many beautiful beaches, find peace on a hiking trail, or rent a 2-person kayak and float along the Wailua River.
If you do not have enough time, you can spend three days in Kauai for a brief overview, assuming you are combining it with other Hawaiian Islands. It is a long flight from most destinations, so a longer vacation makes the journey worthwhile.

Palm Springs, California
By Kristin of Global Travel Escapades
Another destination that’s wonderful for a romantic weekend getaway is Palm Springs. And while the city is located within a vast desert region of Southern California, Palm Springs itself is filled with aesthetic mid-century homes, beautiful palm tree-lined streets, golf courses, and, of course, all kinds of gorgeous resorts. Thus, the city is perfect for those looking for a relaxing and sunny vacation.
Furthermore, there are plenty of activities available that are ideal for couples to partake in! For example, couples interested in learning about the region’s history can hike through Indian Canyons. There, they’ll find a recreated site that demonstrates how the Native American Cahuilla people used to live off the desert land.
Or, for any couples who also happen to be animal lovers, consider checking out the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. The zoo has over 500+ desert species, and even includes interactive zones where guests can feed and take care of some of the animals! Just make sure to get there early to avoid the heat that normally descends on the city in the late afternoon!
Finally, those interested in taking a break from the heat and catching sweeping views of the region can do so via the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. There are even a couple of restaurants and an assortment of hiking trails available from the top of the mountain!
Ultimately, for any couple looking to have an intimate and relaxing weekend getaway in a reliably sunny place, Palm Springs is the ideal romantic destination!

The Catskills, New York
By Ben of Ticket 4 Two Please
The Catskill Mountains, often referred to as simply the Catskills, are a subsection of the Appalachian Mountains found in the centre of New York State – roughly two hours North of Manhattan.
With abundant wildlife, challenging hiking trails and stunning scenery, the Catskills offer a serene escape from the hectic, chaotic life in New York City, making a weekend in the Catskills one of the most romantic and peaceful getaways in the USA.
19th Century landscape painters were so taken aback by the beauty of the Catskills, that the area inspired a number of world-famous landscape paintings – including the infamous ‘A view of Two Lakes and Mountain House’ by the influential Thomas Cole.
Visitors today are still captivated by the region’s beauty, with Minnewaska State Park Reserve proving particularly popular for weekend visitors to the Catskills. Take a romantic stroll around the splendid Minnewaska Lake, flanked on either side by imposing cliff faces.
The fertile land of the Catskills, particularly in Ulster County, make it one of New York’s premier wine-growing regions. Couples should endeavour to follow the 80-mile Shawangunk Wine Trail in the area.
Home to award-winning wineries, cideries and distilleries, the Shawangunk Wine Trail was named as one of National Geographic Traveller’s top 20 must-see destinations.
When you’re sipping on a glass of earthy, locally-produced wine looking over the beautiful mountain range, it’s impossible to disagree with their assessment.
The Catskill Mountains offer a tranquil escape from New York City, making them an ideal location for a romantic weekend getaway in the USA.

San Juan Islands, Washington State
By Patricia of Ze Wandering Frogs
The San Juan Islands are feasible as a day outing from Seattle, Washington State, but most visitors stay for two to three days.
The principal islands are San Juan Island, Orcas Island, Shaw Island, and Lopez Island. However, the first two offer most of the sights and facilities.
Visit the Whale Museum and the British and American Camps dated from the 19th century on San Juan Island, which is also home to the San Juan Island National Historical Park.
From Friday Harbor, the main village on the island, kayaking is a popular hobby. The largest of the San Juan Islands, Orcas Island, housed the Orcas Island Historical Museum, a fantastic venue to learn about the island’s past. In Moran State Park, visit Mount Constitution for sweeping views of the islands.
Alternatively, drive the Orcas Island Loop Road around. Lopez Island is a favorite with bikers, while Shawn Island features the Little Red Schoolhouse, which has been operating continuously since the 19th century.
A Spanish expedition first visited the region in the late 18th century, just before George Vancouver also explored the islands, thus revealing the islands’ more extensive narrative. Including the brief control of the islands by the Hudson’s Bay Company!
The San Juan Islands clearly provide a window into the history of the Pacific Northwest, in addition to its stunning natural scenery of dense forests and vast beaches.
The San Juan Islands are also ideal for soaking in the fantastic sunsets, going on a kayaking trip for two, and enjoying a night of fresh seafood. This makes the San Juan Islands the perfect best road trip from Seattle!
The best way to reach the San Juan Islands is to fly into Sea-Tac International Airport in Seattle, rent a car, and drive to Anacortes, where you will board one of the ferries to the Friday Harbor.

Jackson, New Hampshire
By Kate of New Hampshire Way
If you’re looking for a romantic rural getaway in New England, you’re going to love Jackson, NH! This town in the White Mountains is 10 minutes down the road from North Conway, the most famous resort town in New Hampshire, but it’s a world away.
While the White Mountains are a famously family-friendly destination, Jackson feels much more like a destination for adults. There are several upscale bed and breakfasts in town, some that are child-free and some that have spas, which add to the peaceful romantic vibe. The Inn at Thorn Hill and the Christmas Farm Inn and Spa both make excellent destinations for a romantic getaway.
Jackson is a small town (population: 1,028) and you could see the local attractions in an afternoon, from Jackson Falls waterfall to White Mountain Puzzles to the Museum of White Mountain Art. Just enjoying the small town vibes is a big part of visiting Jackson.
But a long weekend getaway gives you time to experience the eastern side of the White Mountains properly. With Jackson as a base, you can drive to the top of Mount Washington on the Mount Washington Auto Road, hike a portion of the Appalachian Trail, hit up the Settlers Green outlets in North Conway for tax-free discount shopping, visit waterfalls like Glen Ellis Falls or Diana’s Baths, or take a ride on the historic Conway Scenic Railroad.
Jackson is a four-season destination and most beautiful during fall foliage, which peaks in early October. But Jackson also makes a great winter getaway, with sleigh rides, ice skating, and the most extensive cross-country ski trails in New Hampshire!

The Berkshires, Massachusetts
By Kate of Yes, Massachusetts
When it comes to romantic getaways in Massachusetts, many couples head for the coast — Boston, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard. But what if you headed west instead? The Berkshires are one of the true gems of the Bay State and make a wonderful weekend getaway.
“The Berkshires” consist of the towns in Berkshire County, the westernmost county in Massachusetts. The part of New England is home to small towns that look straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting — not surprisingly, as Norman Rockwell himself lived here!
Here you can mix art, history, and the outdoors. Visit historic homes like Naumkeag in Stockbridge, Edith Wharton’s The Mount in Lenox, and Herman Melville’s Arrowhead in Pittsfield.
The town of Stockbridge makes a great base, as it’s central, beautiful, and home to some of the best sites. The Red Lion Inn is a historic inn that is still the best place to stay in town centuries later. Sit out on the porch for people-watching, and be sure to hit up the Norman Rockwell Museum.
Don’t miss a trip up to North Adams and Williamstown to visit two more of the best art museums in the Berkshires: Mass MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) and the Clarke Institute. Great Barrington, to the south, is the Brooklyn of the Berkshires with a funky downtown area and easy access to hikes.
The Berkshires are lovely to visit year-round, but summer is when they’re at their best. At this time Lenox welcomes Tanglewood, the summer concerts with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and plays, dance performances, and art shows fill the various towns. It’s when the Berkshires are the most alive!

Chicago, Illinois
By Nausheen of Global-Gazers
For city lovers, Chicago makes an excellent romantic getaway in the USA. Overall, Chicago is one of the cleaner and more spacious-feeling big cities you’ll encounter in the USA.
In addition to its impressive skyscrapers and renowned architecture, Chicago also offers plenty of green spaces and access to beaches. Those who have never visited Chicago might concern themselves with its safety.
However, from a local’s perspective rest assured Chicago is a safe and beautiful city perfect for couples. Following these Chicago travel tips will ensure a great experience in this city.
Truly, it’s a city where visitors can have it all. Spend a romantic day having breakfast with skyline, lakefront or river views from your hotel. Window shop along the famous Magnificent Mile, and stroll along the charming riverwalk in downtown.
Try a brownie where the treat was first invented, at the Palmer House Hotel. Then, make your way across the street to enjoy Millennium Park. Or, choose to take in an aerial view of the park from the popular Cindy’s Rooftop bar as you toast to love with specialty cocktails.
The neighborhoods outside of downtown Chicago also offer plenty to do. Couples that enjoy sports might consider watching a game at Wrigley Field. Foodie couples should explore the fine dining scene in the West Loop. More eclectic couples could easily spend a day exploring Wicker Park.
One travel tip for planning a romantic getaway in Chicago is to make reservations for any fine dining experiences well in advance. Chicago has an in-demand food scene and many of the top restaurants book up quickly.
A weekend is the perfect amount of time to spend in Chicago, although with so much to do here a longer itinerary would hardly cause boredom.

Napa Valley, California
By Dhara of Roadtripping California
Napa Valley is without a doubt one of the most romantic getaways in the USA! With its rolling hills covered in vineyards, its world-class wines, and fabulous food, it is reminiscent of Tuscany!
One of the best things to do in Napa Valley for couples is simply driving through the valley, taking in the beautiful scenery and the charming wineries.
Whether you visit in the spring, when the wines are budding and mist drapes the distant mountains, or in the fall, when the vineyards are brilliantly attired in shades of red, orange, and yellow, the drive from Napa in the south to Calistoga in the north is very romantic.
Wandering the main streets of the little towns is another fun thing couples will enjoy. With plenty of public art, charming boutiques, wine tasting rooms, and cafes and restaurants, every town in the valley makes for great strolling. In Yountville, you have to visit Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery to split a sweet treat!
Book tables well in advance of your visit for those special romantic dinners for two. While there are numerous topnotch eateries in Napa Valley, tables get booked way ahead of time at the cream of the crop, especially Michelin-starred restaurants and celebrity chef restaurants. But also plan on enjoying casual dining with your significant other, whether it’s a burger at Gotts or Mexican at C Casa.
While you can visit Napa Valley for the day or for the weekend, it’s also the perfect place for an extended relaxing stay as a couple.
Tip: For a special pampering time on your couples getaway, be sure to book a spa treatment: Calistoga is renowned for its mud baths and mineral pools!

Homer, Alaska
By Agnes of The Van Escape
Wild and remote Alaska as a romantic gateway for couples? Yes, if they go to Homer, the most charming and picturesque town on the Kenai Peninsula. There are amazing things to do in Homer for couples who love nature, outdoor activities, and excellent seafood among the romantic scenery of Katchemak Bay.
This town of only 5,500 people is on Homer Spit, a narrow, 4.5-mile-long gravel bar that juts into the bay. Lovers can walk hand in hand on the beach for hours, overlooking the glaciers flowing down into the bay, listening to the sound of the waves, the cries of the seagulls, and spotting the Bald eagles.
The sunrises and sunsets on the peninsula are breathtaking, especially on Bishop’s Beach. It’s also one of the best places in Alaska to try tide-pooling. Homer offers a lot of adventurous activities for couples.
One of the best is kayaking or paddling together in the bay. Another is halibut fishing trips, as Homer is the halibut capital of the world. It’s also worth taking a cruise through Katchemak Bay and admiring the wildlife together. It’s possible to encounter humpback and orca whales, birds, sea otters, and puffins during the trip.
Also, couples who love arts and crafts will feel good in Homer. Along the Homer Spit are great galleries with high-quality crafts, photographs, and paintings. The best is Ptarmigan Arts Cooperative Gallery and Norman Lowell Studio.
Homer is a place for foodies. Homer Spit Oyster Bar serves the best oysters in Alaska, with a view of the bay. For a romantic dinner is worth taking the loved one to Captain Pattie’s Fish House, as they have outstanding seafood and delicious pasta.
To feel the Alaskan atmosphere and strike up a conversation with the locals, it’s worth visiting the iconic, built-in 1897, Salty Dawg Saloon.
Here lovers can try local beer and turn on their favorite song from the old jukebox. All the walls and ceiling are full of one-dollar bills. A couple can write their names on the dollar and stick it on as a memento of their romantic stay in Homer.
The best time for a trip to Homer is mid-June to the first week of September. It is worth packing a windproof and waterproof jacket because it is windy on the peninsula. To enjoy the best activities is worth staying for at least 2-3 days.
