If you’ve spied any photos of Vienna on social media during Christmas time (and you likely have because it’s easily one of the most magical destinations to visit in Europe during the festive period) then you’ll no doubt have seen snaps of the giant red bow in Vienna. Adorning the side of Popp & Kretschmer, this decoration is beautiful to see during the day or at night.
If you’re planning a winter getaway to the Austrian capital, then you’re truly in for a treat. The entirety of the city is transformed into a veritable winter wonderland, with Christmas Markets spilling into the streets, the iconic coffee houses opening their doors to visitors from near and far, and twinkling lights illuminating the early evenings.
How to see the giant red bow of Vienna
If there’s one decoration you’ve probably added to your bucket list, it’s the giant red bow adorning the side of Popp & Kretschmer (address: Kärntner Straße 51 to be precise).
The store was founded in Vienna’s Innere Stadt (1st District) directly opposite the Opera House and dates back to 1889. Today the shop sells all kinds of ladies luxury apparel such as clothing and accessories.
I would personally recommend visiting the store at least twice during your visit to Vienna, ensuring that one time is during the day time and the other at night. While a post dark visit means that you’ll get to see the bow and store illuminated (it truly appears as if the front of the store has been wrapped up for Christmas), this is also the busiest time to visit.
If you want to take photos without the crowds (or even a video of yourself crossing the road in front of the ribbon) then I recommend visiting for sunrise. As the ribbon is only installed for the festive period (December through to the beginning of January), sunrise is a practical time to visit as it’s around 8 AM.
If you want to see yet another Christmas decoration nearby, then you can walk down the road to Gerstner, which have their own giant ornament in the shape of a glittering tree.
Nearby, other Christmas activities can be found in the form of indulging in cake at Sacher or shopping for unique handmade goods at the Karlsplatz Christmas Market. If you only have a short time in the city, be sure to check out our suggestions on how to spend one day in Vienna.
