Buzzing Budapest is one of the most dynamic capitals in Europe. A city split into two parts (Buda and Pest) by the Danube River, there are countless viewpoints where you can take in mesmerising views of the gorgeous architecture. But Budapest in the rain, it’s unfortunately a little less photogenic! Here’s all you need to know about spending a rainy day in Budapest!

However, don’t worry if you’re in Budapest on a rainy day – there are still plenty of things to do here! The city’s geographical position between east and west means that it’s been at a crossroads of history for centuries, and there’s an abundance of museums and historical sites, many of which are under cover.

Plus, Budapest’s popularity as a city break has only increased in recent years, meaning that it boasts plenty of modern attractions, including escape rooms, quirky ruin bars and fanciful cafes (all indoor activities!) For more inspiration, be sure to check out our guide on how to spend one perfect day in Budapest.

Visit the museums

Budapest has over 50 museums, so you certainly won’t get bored in this capital, especially if you’re looking to shelter from the rain! Many focus on the nation’s history, whereas others offer more contemporary exhibits. Here are a few of the best:

Hungarian National Gallery: If you love art, don’t miss this gallery! It features some of the best Hungarian artwork, along with other pieces in temporary and permanent exhibitions.

House of Terror: A very sombre but very important museum, the House of Terror depicts the Nazi and Communist eras of Budapest. Purchase a guided tour of the House of Terror

Budapest History Museum: A comprehensive museum detailing Budapest’s long history as part of the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires, this is a must-visit for history buffs.

Hospital in the Rock: A really unique museum in Budapest, this is a World War Two hospital turned nuclear bunker. It’s a great place to visit to learn about Hungary in the 20th century.

Cafe hop

Thanks to Budapest’s increasing popularity as a modern tourist destination, there are lots of quirky cafes that you can enjoy – perfect for a rainy day! Indeed, from gluten and lactose free options to vegan fare, there’s something for everyone when it comes to coffee shops in Budapest.

Try Empresso Embassy (Budapest, Arany János u. 15, 1051) for quality speciality coffee, New York Cafe (Budapest, Erzsébet krt. 9-11, 1073) for gorgeous architecture and Partisan Cafe (Budapest, Pozsonyi út 16, 1137) for a trendy atmosphere.

Most cafes in Budapest are well-equipped for different dietary requirements, so whatever your preferences, you should be able to enjoy a steaming hot coffee and a sweet treat on the side!

Tour the Hungarian House of Parliament

Touring the Hungarian House of Parliament is a fantastic way to learn about this nation’s history and politics. Tours explore some of the most beautiful parts of the house of parliament; it’s home to stunning statues and frescoes and architectural features like a rib vaulted ceiling in the dome hall.

Along the way, you’ll learn snippets about how Hungary is governed, with details about its past, present and future. As the tour is completely inside, it’s a fantastic activity for a rainy day!

You can only visit on a guided tour, and generally, these must be booked in advance on the official website. However, if you are looking for a last-minute rainy day activity, it’s worth calling or popping in to see if they have had any cancellations. Tours run in English, French, Spanish, German and Hungarian.

Try a Harry Potter-themed escape room

Budapest has so much history, but also plenty of contemporary attractions! It’s brimming with escape rooms – Hungary was actually one of the first countries where they were made popular. So whatever piques your interests, you’ll find an escape room for them in this city!

For any Potterheads, the Wizarding World Escape Rooms are particularly fascinating. You’ll go through up to five rooms as you conquer quests and solve puzzles.

The rooms are related to Harry Potter, but don’t worry if not everyone in your group knows the books or films; you don’t need much knowledge of the stories to participate, just a logical head on your shoulders and a sense of adventure!

Once you’ve escaped, head to The Magic, a Harry Potter-themed cafe serving a range of pub grub foods with smoking drinks served in cauldrons (they’re naturally served without alcohol, but you can choose to add a spirit if you’d like!).

Soak in a spa

You can’t visit Budapest without heading to one of its many spas. They’re the ideal rainy day activity, wonderfully warm and mostly under shelter.

Széchenyi thermal baths are the most famous, and although a large portion of them is outside, they’re still popular on rainy days – sitting in warm thermal water while the rain is lashing down can be quite pleasant! Purchase your Széchenyi Spa Full Day entrance here.

If you want to stick to indoor-only pools, head to Rudas, famous for its rooftop hot tub but has plenty of indoor spa facilities. Purchase your Rudas Spa Wellness and Dining Experience here. Or, Luckas is a local bathhouse that’s completely indoors.

Head to the Ruin Bars

Once you’ve seen the sights of Budapest, it’s time to enjoy the nightlife! Budapest’s ruin bars are located in previously abandoned buildings across the city. They’re unpretentious and great places to soak in the alternative vibe of the Hungarian capital.

Most popular is the buzzy Szimpla Kert, which spans a few rooms and a courtyard. Most of it is inside, however, and a large part of the courtyard (including, importantly, the bar!) is under cover.

Take a day trip

Even if it’s raining in Budapest itself, it doesn’t mean that it will be raining in other cities and towns around the Hungarian capital. So if you truly want to escape the rain, you would do well to check the weather apps and see if it’s also raining in nearby places you want to visit. Go on a river cruise

One of the best ways to get a unique view of Budapest is by going on a cruise on the Danube. Though it’s not as photogenic in the rain, many boat tours are at least partially undercover, all the while allowing visitors to discover even more of the Hungarian capital. Book this 1-Hour Evening Sightseeing Cruise with Drink here in advance.
