A Guide to the Best of Las Playitas, Fuerteventura

Not far from the commercial centre of Gran Tarajal, the little fishing village of a few hundred residents is surrounded by little beaches, and indeed ‘Las Playitas’ in English means just that, ‘Little Beaches’.

Though not bustling with activity or attractions, the little beach town of Fuerteventura merits a visit of an hour or two while exploring the east coast, especially for those planning to visit the nearby lighthouse.

There is ample free parking in the town and we personally brought our own little picnic of sandwiches and soft drinks to enjoy on the harbour, overlooking the rest of the town. For more inspiration, check out our suggested Fuerteventura itinerary and these top quotes about Spain.

Town

The little fishing town comprises of a small narrow streets stacked up on one another while ascending the hill. Wonderful for those who love rural architectural photography, we enjoyed meandering the little roads and spying cats and succulent plants.

There are just a handful of restaurants in town, most being set along the Las Playitas sea front. The eatery with the best view is undoubtedly Bar Restaurante Las Playas, which has a terrace that directly overlooks the sea. Every menu in town is similar: locally caught fish, Canary wrinkled potatoes, and the like.

Tribute to the Fishermen Statue

One of the prominent features of the Las Playitas seafront walk is the Tribute to the Fishermen Statue. The sculpture represents a fisherman and a boy sitting next to a basket of fish and was created by Juan Miguel Cubas Sánchez from Pájara, Fuerteventura in 1969.

Viewpoint

One of the best views over the beaches around the town, as well as the buildings of Las Playitas itself is the Mírador Las Playitas (Las Playitas viewpoint). Unfortunately the map is a little off and so you’ll have to walk a bit further than expected to reach the viewpoint. Once there you’ll find a few benches.

Playa de los Pobres

The largest beach in Las Playitas is formed of dark volcanic sand that is typical of the region and can be found on the fringes of the old town. Offering a lovely view of the harbour town next door, the beach is regularly quite quiet, albeit is almost always windy.

Punta La Entallada Lighthouse

Though not in the village itself, the Punta La Entallada Lighthouse is one of the most famous landmarks in all of Fuerteventura and even getting there is an adventure in of itself. While the roads to reach the lighthouse are well paved, the road is very steep.

The Faro de la Entallada was constructed in the 1950s and is built in several architectural styles, including Moorish design, making it unique to the Canary Islands. The lighthouse stands at 196 m above sea level, meaning that it is the 3rd highest in the Islands.

What’s more is that the Lighthouse is the closest point in the Canary Islands to the West Coast of Africa and is only 100 km away. However, try as we might, there was no way to spy the coastline of Morocco from Fuerteventura without specialist equipment!

The views from the viewpoint directly in front of the lighthouse give visitors a chance to enjoy the unique geology of the area, as well as see the crashing waves below. The area is particularly popular among bird watchers.
