A brief history

The Churchill Arms is one of London’s most historic pubs. A public house has occupied this site since at least the late 19th century, but the official Churchill Arms website (amongst some other dubious claims) states that the pub was built in 1750.

The pub was originally known as the “Church-on-the-Hill” but was renamed following the end of WWII hostilities as a tribute to Sir Winston Churchill. It’s said that in the 1800s, Churchill’s grandparents, John Winston Spencer Churchill and his wife, Frances, were patrons at the pub. That’s why you can see the Churchill portrait hanging outside. Step inside, and you’ll find plenty of Churchill memorabilia hanging from the walls.

There’s also a comical plaque that reads “Churchill made his wartime broadcasts here, and laughed at Hitler’s watercolours while drinking banana daiquiris and farting.”

Today, the Churchill Arms is most famous for its vibrant floral displays and has even claimed to be a Chelsea Flower Show winner! Come Christmas, the pub goes all out and is decked head to toe in twinkling lights and festive cheer. It also claims to be the first pub in London to serve Thai food alongside its local ales.

How to visit

This historic pub is located at 119 Kensington Church Street, on the corner of Campden Street in Notting Hill, London. Upon visiting, you can either stop in for a drink, Thai food, or simply enjoy the decorations from outside! As with all pubs in the UK, it’s one of the best ways to experience traditional British culture.

Today, the pub is managed by Fuller, Smith & Turner, a public limited company based in London. It’s open every day from 11 am to 11 pm, except for Sundays when it’s open from 12 pm to 10:30 pm.
