L’Hotel Particulier Beziers Review: Luxury in the Heart of Occitanie

Nestled away on a sleepy street in the outskirts of old-town Beziers, l’Hotel Particulier Beziers is a little slice of luxury in the heart of Occitanie.

Surrounded by greenery, this former mansion house was first constructed during the 19th-century and traces of the hotel’s former life as a family home can be found in the ceiling mouldings, original doors, and beautiful ambiance to be found throughout the property.

Checking in to 4-star hotel, L’Hotel Particulier Beziers

Upon arrival in Beziers, I passed the picturesque Plateau des Poètes and wandered towards the hotel. Once inside the wrought iron gates, I climbed the ornate staircase leading up to the mansion and rang the chime of the doorbell.

Immediately I was welcomed into the accommodation where I was given a whirlwind tour of the hotel’s facilities, and shown to my room. Inside, the hotel is intimate yet spacious; there are just nine rooms on offer, each set at several different price points, all are luxurious.

Catching up with co-owner Chrystèle towards the end of my stay, I was able to discover a little more history about the property. L’Hotel Particulier Beziers was constructed for a family of Strasbourg brewers during the 19th-century (1892 to be precise), and the property next door was even once used to brew the beer!

Today, little traces of the Kayser family who once occupied the building can still be found in authentic details throughout the hotel; notably in the pair of vintage beer bottles still located on the mantlepiece of the breakfast room.

As Chrystèle said to me during our meeting; the hotel is still ‘dans son jus’. (‘In its juice’, which means to say in its original form). Elsewhere on site, traces of history have been preserved in the way in which small pebbles have been used in amongst the paving stones rather than concrete.

Garden & Patio Area

Access to the secluded garden and patio area is available throughout the day and night. There’s a swimming pool which makes for the perfect place to cool off come summertime, while the nearby patio with loungers is a great place to catch up on some reading, or even to learn more about the Occitanie region from one of the many local guides located in the hotel’s lounge.

Lounge, Breakfast Room & Bar areas

Instead of having a minibar in each room, the hotel is home to an ever open lounge just across from the reception area. Complete with an honesty bar, the space is filled with dozens of books detailing the local area and beyond.

In fact, you could easily spend hours nestled in one of the comfy sofas, eating some of the complimentary sweets on offer or sipping wine from the carefully crafted list.

After all, it’s worth noting that if you’re a wine drinker, then you’ve come to the right place! Each year, Languedoc-Roussillon produces more wine than Chile, Bordeaux, and South Africa combined!

Elsewhere on the ground floor, the welcoming reception area is always staffed by members who speak French and English, and are always happy to recommend a local French dining experience or some interesting things to see and do nearby.

The Bedrooms at l’Hotel Particulier Beziers

The Hotel Particulier has three sizes of room, though all are adequately large for a couple, friends, or family to share (should you want an extra bed or a cot placed in your room, this is possible for an extra fee)! High-speed Wi-Fi is available from every room and I was easily able to work from the chair and desk provided in the corner of my room.

The decor is light, modern, and minimal, a stark yet striking contrast from the well-preserved details of the old building.

Carpets are fluffy, while the bed was so comfy I could have stayed in it all day. Think of l’Hotel Particulier Beziers as your home away from home- with a little luxurious touch thrown in and room service available throughout the day!

Les Folies: If you’re looking for a true slice of luxury during your time in Occitanie, then you can’t go wrong in opting for one of the bright, spacious rooms that are the suites. Complete with luxurious tubs which have light changing displays, as well as an extra large walk-in shower, you won’t even want to leave your room to see the rest of the city!

Les Elegantes: Though slightly smaller than ‘Les Folies’, ‘Les Elegantes’ rooms are still quite sizeable at between 28-32 metres. Complete with a queen sized bed and spacious window offering views onto the city or the pretty courtyard behind the hotel, it’s the perfect room for couples or friends enjoying a weekend getaway!

Les Intimes: During my solo stay at the hotel, I stayed in one of the ‘intimate’ rooms (no. 606)- which was a pretty deceptive name considering that it was still much larger than my room back at home! Located on the second floor of the property, my room offered pretty views onto the street below.

Truth be told, it’s really the small details and attention to design which make a stay in the Hotel Particulier so special. Staff are attentive, friendly, and service is what is truly this former mansion’s point of difference.

All rooms are decorated in a minimalist style and each offers a window with a different aspect of the street below. Once I’d explored my room in more depth, I soon discovered that there was a yoga mat tucked away below a cupboard, and a small scented diffuser nestled in another corner.

Bathroom products are by ‘VRAI’ and bedroom highlights are in rose gold, a great contrast to the bright white of the rest of the place. Elsewhere in the room, there was a coffee maker to enjoy, fluffy bathrobes, several macaroons, and some a jug of still water which was refreshed on a daily basis.

Nearby Attractions to L’Hotel Particulier Beziers

Beziers is a city that is most famously associated with the Cathars but was first founded much earlier, during the Roman era. Today, the city is home to several UNESCO world heritage sites, including the locks of Fonserannes, a unique set of nine locks constructed in the 19th-century along the Canal du Midi.

Elsewhere in Beziers, the impressive cathedral (complete with Bishop’s Garden and cloisters), as well as the ‘Pont Vieux’ are well worth a wander around. Although there’s plenty of things to do in Beziers, and even more to see, the city is the perfect place from which to base yourself for a series of day trips from the city.

Day trip to Narbonne

Over the centuries, the river running through the former Roman port city of Narbonne has silted up to such an extent that the French settlement now lies some 15 km away from the sea.

Today, the city is instead home to a plethora of ancient buildings, including several museums. Narbonne is just fifteen minutes from Beziers via regional train.

Day trip to Sete

The coastal city of Sete is best-known for its restaurants containing sea-inspired menus and nearby oyster fields. Sete is situated just half an hour from Beziers by train and remains a working fishing port city to this day.

Day trip to Montpellier

As the capital of the Languedoc region, Montpellier has oodles of things to do and is best explored on foot. However, the best thing to do in Montpellier is to leave the city limits and head to the Château de Flaguergues.

This mansion house has expertly manicured gardens and an impressive collection of Flemish tapestries. Within the city itself, there are plenty of museums to visit and oodles of winding cobbled lanes to wander along.

How to get to Beziers

Visiting the city of Beziers, in the heart of Occitanie could not be easier. The city has its own airport in the form of Béziers Cap d’Agde Airport. Bus fares from the airport to the city centre (of which the Gare Routière stop is literally a three-minute walk from l’Hotel Particulier Beziers) cost just €1,60.

Although a little further away, Montpellier, Carcassonne, and Perpignan all have their own airports as well. If you’re looking to visit Beziers from within France itself, then the Beziers train station offers regular connections to Montpellier, the rest of the region, and as far away as Paris.

I was a guest of L’Hotel Particulier Beziers for two nights during my stay in Occitanie. However, all opinions, photos, and fascination with history remain my own!  Rooms start at €115.
