A brief history of Vietri sul Mare

Originally named Marcina by the Etruscan’s (an ancient civilisation of Italy), who settled in the seaside town for its maritime trade, which flourished.

That was until the vandals of Gaiseric came and destroyed the town, the surviving locals rebuilt and renamed the town, Vietri sul Mare, coming from the Latin word ‘vetus’, which means ancient, concerning the old city on which they built upon.

The town’s name also translates from Italian as ‘glass on the sea’, referencing to the glassmaking heritage of this small town. A tradition which, alongside the ceramic trade of the town, has also been happening since the 15th century.

Eventually succeeded by the Romans, where the production of pottery and ceramics began to boom, and would continue to do so for years to come.

Today, Vietri sul Mare stands as a historic gem where for more than five centuries of clay has been worked, glazed and decorated into traditional and unique artisanal works. Lining the streets and filling the shops, it’s impossible to miss this beautiful homemade craft when visiting!
