STICK UP FOR YOUR DREAMS BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE WILL!

sophie nadeau zurich stick up for your dreams

People always say that you should follow your passions, pursue your dreams, wander off into the sunset and all that other fluffy unicorn stuff… but that can be kind of hard, right? I mean, how many people wake up and think ‘I’m going to follow my dreams today‘. Literally no one. We all have bills to pay, stuff to study, and just, like, work. Life has a funny way of getting in the way of our dreams. It has a funny way of getting in the way of what we really want. But the ironic truth is, if you don’t stick up for your dreams, then who else will?

Start by admitting your dreams to yourself.

I often think the hardest thing about dreams is admitting them to yourself. We’re scared. Scared of what society will think, scared of what our partner will think, scared of what our friends will think. And being judged by the people we know and love is kind of really f****g scary.

When we’re younger, we’re often asked ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ When you’re little, the answer doesn’t really matter. You say ‘astronaut‘ or ‘ballerina‘ (or in my case ‘palaeontologist‘) and adults laugh and pat you on the head. But when we get older and grow into adulthood, the question becomes more and more important. It’s the kind of question that can define the paths our lives go down.

So, what do you want to do be when you grow up?

Okay, now I’m more than willing to bet than an answer popped straight into your head. No matter how unrealistic it is, I bet you came up with something! (And don’t worry, you can keep that one a secret for now!) The reality is, you do probably have an idea of what you want to do. If you’re like 99% of the population, you want to be happy and be in a career that you’re passionate about. The problem is, what we’re passionate about often doesn’t resonate well with the people around us.

So yeah, you do probably have an idea of what you want to do. If you’re like 99% of the population, then you want to be happy and pursuing a career that you’re passionate about. The problem is, what we’re passionate about often doesn’t resonate well with the people around us.

So now you’ve found your passion, then how do you go about pursuing it? How do you go about pursuing your dreams? How do you stick up for your dreams?

Look for actionable ways to pursue that dream.

Life is all about compromises. When we’re little, we get told that ‘we can do whatever we want’. The sad truth is, that’s hardly ever possible. Even the people we most admire, the people we have the most respect for have made compromises to get where they are today.

Say your dream in life is to become a photographer. Why not look into ways of improving your photography to get to a level where you can pursue your passion? Why not make a game-plan for becoming a photographer by starting to apply for freelance work or becoming an assistant? Little steps and an actionable plan are the way you can stand up for your dreams today.

When I realised I wanted to become a writer, not only did I realise that I have a lot of practice to do (literally just so much), but I decided to also finish school because I knew it would be a good backup plan should none of this writing stuff works out. Plus school fees are kind of pretty expensive in the UK so I’ve already shelled out more than I’d like to admit to!

But, like I said before if you don’t stick up for your dreams then who else will?

Never give up!

When you’ve finally admitted your dream to yourself, it’s time to start acting on it. Easier said than done. Whatever you want to do, you’re going to have to prepare yourself for a lot of ‘no‘s.

Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever.

Whatever you thought of when I asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up, that’s likely your passion. And whatever happens, no one can take that passion away from you. So what’s stopping you from taking actionable steps to start pursuing your dream today?

Besides, you’ll never know if you can make it if you don’t even try! Stick up for your dreams today (and tell me all your deepest darkest secrets in the comments)…

lovely post! I sometimes find myself thinking “why am I even trying anymore? I’m never gonna get to where I want anyway” and it’s exactly those thoughts that separate the people who reach their goals and the people who don’t. So I keep trying 🙂
