Lannan Bakery & Pantry has quickly become one of Edinburgh’s most talked-about pastry spots. This Stockbridge bakery, headed by Darcie Maher, was awarded La Liste’s prestigious Pastry Opening of the Year Award 2024. The pastries here are quite literally pristine, with every fold and flake baked to perfection – it’s a serious spot for those who appreciate high quality baked goods.
Something to note is that Lannan has blown up on social media, along with the locals! So much so that it’s actually impossible to visit without a queue… so be sure to get here early to avoid an impossibly long wait!

The first location opened in Edinburgh’s neighbourhood of Stockbridge in 2017, and they’ve since expanded into Leith as of August 2022. Everything is baked from scratch on-site; if you pop into the Leith store, you may well see the bakers busy away in the back.
Best for: Classic pastries done exceptionally well.

Krema Bakehouse
Address: 21 Leith Walk, Edinburgh EH6 8LN
Krema Bakehouse creates delicious desserts as well as bespoke bakes for any occasion. This refined, minimalistic and modern bakery has an open kitchen where you can literally see artisans hard at work creating the next perfect sweet treat for purchase. Some of their most popular desserts include brownies, particularly the s’mores-topped brownie.
It also resides next door to one of Edinburgh’s best bookshops, Argonaut Books!
Best for: Refined pastries and a calm, modern bakery vibe.

Twelve Triangles
Address: multiple locations throughout the city (there are seven)
Twelve Triangles is a cornerstone of Edinburgh’s modern baking scene. It came to the city in 2015 and has since flourished into seven different locations across the city. This bakery is best known for its naturally leavened sourdough and commitment to slow, traditional methods (and they serve delicious coffee too!)
A notable feature of this bakery is that it has since opened a café called ‘The Kitchen Table,’ where you can enjoy their delicious baked goods along with a changing selection of seasonal ingredients that celebrate local suppliers.
Best for: Delicious sourdough bread, house loaves, and focaccia.

KVASA Bakery

KVASA describes itself as an ‘organic sourdough microbakery’. This family-run bakery makes some delicious sourdough breads and bakes, including a sourdough vegan croissant. Their small rustic shop is framed by the large kitchen in the back, so you’re instantly hit with the smell of freshly baked bread as you walk in. They sell a variety of coffee beans too!

Project Canelé is particularly celebrated for its French-style pastries and dedication to authentic techniques. Locals flock here to try out their delicately crafted canelés, tarts, and other speciality treats that balance traditional methods with creative flair.

Storries Home Bakery
Address: 279 Leith Walk, Edinburgh EH6 8PD
A true Edinburgh institution, Storries Bakery has been serving the city for generations. And what’s more is that it’s open 24/7, locals often refer to it as the “midnight bakery,” and it’s not too uncommon to see people queuing out the door on a Saturday night (hence the funny posters on the door that say “Saving Hangovers Since…… Whenever You Got Wrecked.”)
It’s a staple and beloved bakery to those who live in Edinburgh, and is perhaps best known for its unique variety of pies. Some of their most renowned pie flavours include: Steak Pie, Macaroni Cheese Pie, Chicken Curry Pie, Doner Kebab Pie, Lasagna Pie, and some popular Vegan Pies.

The Sicilian Pastry Shop brings the flavours of Sicily straight to Edinburgh. Locals rave about their cannoli, cassata, and other authentic Sicilian treats. Each pastry is made using traditional recipes and high-quality ingredients, giving you a true taste of Sicily without having to leave the city.
Tucked away, this small hidden bakery also serves a variety of freshly made sandwiches, and they offer a bespoke cake service for those looking for baked treats or cakes for special occasions.
Best for: Sicilian treats and bespoke cakes for occasions.

Ante
Address: 1b Haddington Pl, Edinburgh EH7 4AE
Self-described as a daytime bakery and restaurant, Ante is both a place where you can pick up fresh baked goods, and also sit to enjoy a meal with friends in a cosy ambience. This cosy spot is situated in one of Edinburgh’s charming tenement basements, and found above is one of my favourite wine bars, Spry – which is owned by the same people!

Bayne’s the Family Bakers

Baynes Bakery is a name almost every Scot recognises. This growing Scottish bakery chain now has over 70 locations across Scotland. Renowned for their affordable prices, generous portions, and comforting bakes, Baynes is a staple for many locals.
Whether it’s a morning roll, a slice, or something savoury for lunch, Baynes delivers dependable quality that keeps people coming back. It may not be flashy or quite as unique and artisanal as other bakeries on this list, but it’s deeply woven into everyday life in Edinburgh and remains a staple pastry spot.
