Ao Nang

Ao Nang is a tourist hub in southern Thailand, and thanks to its proximity to the nearby Krabi International airport, it’s somewhat of a gateway to the wider Krabi region. At night, the town comes alive, with restaurants and bars spilling into the streets, and late-night shopping is available until well into the evening.

The Ao Nang Landmark Night Market is part of this vibrant nightlife and is one of the most popular things for tourists to do after dark. It’s also one of the best markets in the area as it’s reliably open every night of the week!

A history of Ao Nang Night Market

While it’s hard to believe upon visiting nowadays, Ao Nang was once a quiet, sleepy fishing village before developing into a bustling tourist hub. Over the past two decades, the seaside town has seen rapid tourism growth, quickly becoming a primary tourist hub in the Krabi Province of Thailand.

It’s for this reason that the Ao Nang Landmark Night Market was established. While there’s no exact date of when the market first appeared, online reviews date back to at least 2017, so we can assume it’s just before or around that time.

Today, it is one of the most popular things to do in the area after dusk. Serving as both a foodie haven and an entertainment hub, the night market bustles with energy and offers a family-friendly, fun atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.

What to do and see at Ao Nang Night Market

Get food

Of course, the number one priority when visiting any market is to sample all of the delicious street food on offer! There are several stalls, selling everything from fresh smoothies to roasted corn on the cob, traditional Thai street foods, and fried rice or noodle dishes to indulge in.

Shop for souvenirs

I was pleasantly surprised by the number of souvenirs you can find at Ao Nang’s night market. You can browse a good mix of both artisan crafts and unique gifts alongside the more standard souvenir stalls. There are plenty of stalls selling seashell-focused jewellery, handwoven bags, leather sandals, cute keychains, and small trinkets, etc.

In Thailand, haggling is common and often an expected part of the shopping experience. So, don’t be afraid to name your price (within reason, of course) and haggle with the vendor for a lower price than is advertised. Remember, haggle culture is for items only, not food purchases – do not haggle for food.

Entertainment/ fairground rides

If you’re travelling with younger family members, then it’s worth noting that there are a few attractions that are aimed at children. Small fairground rides, funfair-style stalls where you can play games and win toys, and an inflatable slide, as well as plenty of toys to purchase, make the night market enjoyable for the younger audience, too!

Watch Live performances

If you are interested, there is also a Muay Thai stadium next door. On certain nights, you can visit the stadium to watch one of the country’s most beloved sports and must-see cultural experiences. This high-energy fighting art is nicknamed the“Art of Eight Limbs,” and is deeply rooted in Thailand’s heritage, so I highly recommend going to a show if you have the chance!

There’s also sometimes live music at the market, which typically happens over the busier periods at weekends.

While many people opt to eat their food while wandering around the market, there are a few seating areas. It works on a first come first serve basis, so if you see a free table, just pop yourself down and enjoy whatever treat you have picked up from the market!

There are all kinds of foods to be sampled at the market, and it’s not just Thai, you can expect to find a variety of southeast asian flavours here. From street food snacks to fresh fruit, full meals and sweet treats. Here are some of the foods you can expect to find:

What to know before visiting the night market

Opening hours

Ao Nang Landmark Night Market is open every day from 4 p m to 11 pm. While the market opens fairly early for a night market, it tends to only get lively from 6 pm, so it’s best to visit from this time onwards.

Getting there

The night market is situated just a short stroll from Ao Nang beach. In fact, you’ll likely smell it before you see it. If staying in Krabi Town, it’s possible to drive or take a tuk-tuk, but this would take around 30 to 40 minutes.

Top tips

Cash is king: Most stalls will only accept cash, so be sure to have Thai Baht with you. I recommend bringing smaller notes, just in case the stall vendors have little change.

Head to the market a little bit later: As I said before, for the best experience of the market, you should aim to head there a little later. This just means almost all of the food options will be available, the market will be in full swing, and the atmosphere will feel more buzzing with energy!

For quieter browsing, head to the market from 4 pm – 6 pm, but to visit the market at its peak, aim to go between 6 pm – 8 pm.

Watch your belongings: The market is fairly safe, but as with any crowded public place, it’s always best to keep an eye on your bag and be wary of potential pickpockets.

Using Thai phrases: While there is no expectation to speak Thai, most vendors will either understand or speak English themselves; it’s always polite to attempt the basics: “Sawasdee” (hello) and “khob khun” (thank you).
