What is Positano known for?

It’s probably not a surprise to find out that Positano is known worldwide for its beauty, coined as a scenic seaside paradise this gem is one of the most sought after of the Amalfi Coast and wows all those who visit!

Famed for its vibrant colours and unusual rock formations that make the houses appear to be like a pyramid, this slope side city is like no other, and has served as inspiration to artists, writers, filmmakers and many more. Not to mention, its sandy beaches and breathtaking views of the blue allure stretching far beyond.

Famous author John Steinbeck spent a lot of time in this Italian haven, in fact he published an essay in 1953, in which thereafter saw many more flock towards this gem of the Amalfi Coast.

“It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” – extract from ‘Positano Bites Deep’, John Steinback

Visit the beach

There are a number of different beaches to visit in Positano and the one you decide to check out will depend entirely on your personal preference and what you want to get out of a beach day. One thing to note before your trip, the beaches are not sand, so comfy shoes are a must!

Here are some of the most popular beaches in town:

Spiaggia Grande

The main beach and by far the busiest spot of Positano is Spiaggia Grande, this is the beach you see in all the photos of the picturesque town. Easily reached by foot, it’s a 5 minute walk from the centre square Piazza dei Mulini, it’s situated just by the town’s main port.

Although the greyish colour of the sandy pebbles are not the most beautiful, the looming coloured houses above and sparkling sea ahead make it all the worthwhile. Plus, this beach is a spot to find water excursions and is also a hub of activity for Positano’s nightlife scene.

La Scogliera

Located at the very end of the main beach, if you carry on walking down you will find the exclusive section of the beach, La Scogliera. This luxury beach resort is perched on the rocks of the Amalfi Coast, offering views of Li Galli Islands, serving to pamper guests as they soak up the sunshine.

Fornillo Beach

Situated to the left of the main beach, Fornillo beach is also easily reached by foot and is Positano’s second largest beach. Following along a gorgeous path you’ll find this hidden gem, nestled between the rocky cliffs, it offers slightly quieter and more tranquil alternative to that of Spiaggia Grande.

Arienzo Beach Club

Also known as the beach of 300 steps, the Arienzo beach club is tucked away in a bay just around the corner from Postiano. Known as a spot away from the noise and crowds, it’s only accessible by shuttle boat or the steep climb down the staircase.

See the little models

Throughout the Amalfi Coast, usually by the roadside or tucked away into the cliffside, it’s not uncommon to see miniature model villages built into the rock. Generally, these curious miniatures are small shrines to honour the Virgin Mary.

It’s also worth noting that ceramics are important to the cultural heritage of the Amalfi Coast (as well as economically) the skill and use of clay is a long tradition and art. So if you get a chance be sure to buy a handmade ceramic as a souvenir!

Go shopping for La Moda Positano

Treat yourself! Wander the gorgeous streets filled with all kinds of small shops and cute boutiques. From beautifully handmade clothing, handmade ceramics, chic handbags and plenty more, it’s a fashionista’s haven.

Positano is known worldwide for its fashion. A style discovered in the 1950s where an awareness of casual and loose clothing, (especially linen material) to match bathing suits, soared in popularity!

Of course, there’s also shops abundant with local wines, produce and the delicious Italian liqueur Limoncello, an absolute must-try when exploring the Amalfi Coast.

Eat at a rooftop restaurant/ drink at a rooftop bar

There’s no denying that Positano is expensive, however if you are only there for a short time it’s definitely worth splashing out on a restaurant with a view. Whether it’s during the day or an evening meal, there truly is nothing better than dining on delicious Italian cuisine and soaking up the magical scenery.

We personally dined at the Adamo ed Eva and had a lovely start to the evening by enjoying cocktails at the Eden Sky Bar followed by a dinner on the terrace overlooking Positano and the sea beyond.

Take a boat tour

Truly a magical way to experience the Amalfi Coastline is by taking a boat tour like this one. Not only will you see spectacular views of Positano town, but you’ll also be shown hidden coves and bays along the cliffside as well as charming fishing villages and the iconic Faraglioni rocks, making for an unforgettable experience!

There are many different tours, from guided coastlines showing the fascinating rock formations, to swimming ones (which are more family orientated) or sunset viewing. Find more about boat tours in Positano and how to book them here.

Stroll around the town

The perfect way to experience what this Amalfi pearl has to offer is simply to get lost around its winding maze of narrow streets and stumble across cosy spots as well as some hidden viewpoints!

Of course the best way has to be with a gelato in hand. Indulge in a traditional Italian gelato as you soak up the atmosphere of this enchanting town. We recommend the Ice Cream shop of Buca di Bacco or Collina Positano Bakery, both of which are open till late.

Visit a church

Located in the heart of the town, hugging the cliffside, you can find the beautiful church of Santa Maria Assunta. Allegedly dating back as far as the second half of the 10th century, this church was once the abbey of Positano’s Benedictine monastery and home to Black Madonna.

Steeped in fascinating history, today, this iconic church features a stunning dome covered in colourful majolica tiles, and inside, you’ll find beautiful frescoes and a 13th-century Byzantine-style icon of the Virgin Mary. It’s also free to visit! (Making it one of the few budget things to do in Positano…)

Hike the Path of the Gods

Offering the best views in all of the Amalfi Coast, this popular hiking trail is sure to leave you spellbound and not one to miss!

The mountain trail is about 7km (4.34 miles) and goes up to a height of 630 meters above sea level. Here’s what you need to know before you go:

  • Difficulty: considered to be a moderately challenging route (be prepared for lots of stairs!)
  • What to bring: comfy walking shoes, a snack anf plenty of water, you are in the mediterranean climate after all
  • Duration: allow for 4 hours if you are doing the full route
  • Best time to go: either early morning or later in the evening, you just want to avoid the peak heat of the day for your comfort

It starts from Nocelle, so from Positano you’ll need to follow the staircase up (approximately 1700 steps) and then follow the path along to Bomerano. It’s a pretty easy and clear path to follow and trust us when we say, it’s worthwhile.

Take a day trip to Capri

If you happen to have some time in Positano then Capri is not too far away and makes for the perfect day trip away when exploring the Amalfi Coastline. Famed for its fascinating rock formations, stretches of dramatic coastlines and crystal clear waters, the natural beauty alone is enough reason to want to visit Capri as soon as possible.

Only a short 40 minute boat trip away, there’s a ferry that runs between Positano and Capri during the summer months, as well as various different guided boat tours you can book.

Abundant with things to see and explore, here’s just a small list of what to do on your visit:

  • Piazzetta, watch the world go by on the main square
  • Garden of Augustus, a terraced garden sprinkled with statues, overlooking breathtaking views
  • Blue Grotto, a popular attraction, this magical sea cave is illuminated by the sun
  • Via del Pizzolungo, a scenic coastal path walk taking you to the Natural Arch
  • Via Camerelle (a paradise for shopaholics!)

Where to stay in Positano

Thanks to its association with luxury, it’s fair to say that staying in Positano doesn’t come cheap and so if you want to save some money, I would recommend staying a little further down the coastline in Sorrento.

With this being said, having an evening in Positano will allow you to enjoy the town without the crowds and you’ll also be able to experience the magic of nighttime in this dreamy destination. Here are some of the best places to stay in Positano:

Le Sirenuse: This is without a doubt, one of the most famous hotels in the entirety of Italy thanks to its gorgeous views and five-star amenities. The pool is particularly famous as it provides stunning views over the rest of the town. Check prices and availability here.

Villa Treville: Indulge in utter opulence at Villa Treville hotel and villa complex, where you can stay in exquisitely adorned suites named after past proprietors and renowned visitors. A plethora of delights await to elevate your stay to an exceptional level, including secluded gardens, personal plunge pools, and an exquisite dining establishment. Check prices and availability here.
