The trees were a gift from the citizens of Osaka in Japan to the citizens of Hamburg in Germany as a symbol of friendship in the 1960s. In total, around 5000 trees were initially planted on the Altona Balcony, Alster, the Kennedy Bridge, and the Alsterkrugchaussee, though more have since been added.

When do the cherry blossoms in Hamburg bloom?
Come springtime, the true arrival of good weather (longer days and higher temperatures on the thermometer) are accompanied by the blossoming of pink trees: cherry blossoms. In Hamburg, cherry blossoms tend to bloom from the end of March through until the middle of April.
The exact date depends on what the weather has been like that year. If you want to be sure to see at least some blossoms and have to plan a visit in advance, be sure to book your Hamburg stay for the first or second week of April. Unfortunately, if there is stormy or rainy weather, then the cherry blossom season will be over even faster.
Where to see cherry blossoms in Hamburg
Alsterpark
Hands down, the best place to enjoy the sakura in Hamburg is at Alsterpark, where visitors can enjoy rows of blossom trees. If you want to get an extra special view of the blossoms, then you can book to go on a boat tour of Alster Lake. Alster tourism puts on a special culinary cruise of the Alter Lake in honour of cherry blossom season.
Alsterkrugchaussee
The Alsterkrugchaussee is a 4 km long thoroughfare which stretches through a number of important Hamburg districts. During the springtime, this road is surrounded by beautiful pink blooming trees.
Kennedy Bridge
Kennedy Bridge is a bridge which crosses over the Alster Lake. Completed in 1953, the structure is not the most aesthetically pleasing to look at! With this being said, the view from the bridge offers beautiful vistas of the cherry blossoms and the sparkling water below.
Altonaer Balkon (Altona Balcony)
One of the most popular and green parks in Hamburg is Altonaer Balkon, which also happens to be one of the best places to see cherry blossoms in Hamburg during the spring time. The park also offers spectacular views of the river, bridge, and boats.
Hamburg Cherry Blossom Festival
Hamburg is actually a twin sister of Oaska in Japan, and since 1968, the Japanisches Kirschblütenfest (Japan Cherry Blossom Festival) has been celebrated in the German city on an annual basis. 2024 will mark the 56th Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival in Hamburg.
During this time, as well as Hanami Sakura (flower watching), there are a number of events which take place. This includes fireworks over the Outer Alster at 10:30 p.m on the cherry blossom festival weekend. Please note that, while the cherry blossoms flower in March and April, the festival is typically held at the end of May.
Cherry blossom queen
There is also a Cherry Queen at the Hamburg Festival, who is elected once every two years. The privilege of having a cherry blossom queen has only been granted in a few select cities outside of Japan.
Hamburg has had a cherry blossom queen since 2015, when the “Japan Sakura Foundation” gave the right to German-Japanese Society in Hamburg to elect a queen. In order to become cherry blossom queen, young women in Hamburg must submit a CV along with a cover letter and photo.
