Picture perfect Èze is perched high in the mountains, somewhere along the French Riviera. Walled, medieval, and dating back centuries, even today the town can only be reached on foot or via a twisted winding road. Here’s your guide to the best things to do in Èze, as well as where to stay and the top attractions in the area.

A brief history of Èze
The surrounding area of this ancient settlement is said to have been populated as early as 2000 BC. Remains of silver dating back from the 3rd century were found (in the late 19th century) and are now part of the British Museum’s collection. The area is believed to have been occupied by both Romans and the Moors, for over 80 years.
It wasn’t until the 12th century BC that Èze became a habitable town, and by 1388 it was characterised by its steep medieval cobblestone streets, and fortified by a stronghold under the jurisdiction of the royal Italian House of Savoy. Over the next few centuries, Èze would be destroyed and rebuilt several times.
Finally, in 1860 it was decided that the village would be designated as part of France. The village is often referred to as the “eagle’s nest” thanks to its strategic location on the hillside and the stunning views it offers overlooking the French Mediterranean Sea.
Today, there is a population of around 2,300 people, filled with historical roots and hidden treasures this enchanting little medieval town remains quieter than most places along the French Riviera, making for a tranquil respite without ever having to worry about the crowds.

What is Èze known for?
The peaceful and enchanting town of Èze is best known for its elevated position above the surrounding area, providing great views over the Provençal countryside and to the sea. It’s also known for making the world-famous perfume, Fragonard which has been produced at Maison Fragonard since 1926.

Best things to do in Èze
Wander around the medieval streets
Truly the best way to experience the beauty and charm of Èze is to simply wander around the cobbled medieval streets and soak up the historic stone buildings. As if being transported back in time, this fairytale village offers a picture-perfect view at every turn you take!

Notre Dame de l’Assomption
Dating back to the 18th century, this quaint little Baroque-style church is nestled in the heart of the village. The interior is richly decorated, with stunning paintings adorning the ceilings and small chapels can be found on either side.
The church still holds services regularly, it’s free to visit and take a peek around and open daily from 9 AM- 7 PM.

Chapelle Sainte-Croix, des Pénitents blancs
The oldest monument in the village is a small chapel that was built in 1306. Topped with a bell tower, the interior dates back to the 17th century. Pénitents blancs translates to White Penitents which the church takes its name from, after members of the order who were responsible for looking after those suffering from plague.

Nietzsche Path
Perfect for those who love hiking, this popular mountainous pathway offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean landscape and is named after German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, who settled in Èze and would often hike the steep trail connecting the medieval village to the seaside.
The hike takes around 1 hour and it’s recommended to wear comfortable shoes as the trail can be quite steep at points and the ground is uneven.

Shop for souvenirs
Èze is filled with small boutiques and galleries selling local crafts, art, clothing and plenty more treasures waiting to be discovered. Tucked away on almost every narrow street you’ll find unique and hidden shops all set within the historic medieval buildings of the town.

Jardin Exotique
If you love all things botany-related, then a visit to the exotic gardens is an absolute must! Found at the very top of the village, yuccas, agaves, cacti and aloes are planted around the ruins of a medieval fortress that was destroyed in 1706.
The price of adult admission to visit the gardens is €6 and they are open every day from 9 AM – 6:30 PM.
Fragonard Factory
One of the most unique things to do while visiting the village is to learn about the scent that put Èze on the perfume map, as well as the traditional techniques and workings of perfumery.
The story of Fragonard began when entrepreneur Eugène Fuchs decided that the magic of perfume was the business lead he wanted to follow, the Parfumerie Fragonard opened its doors to business in 1926. The perfume itself is named after famous native painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and conveniently this was also King Louis XV’s favourite painter!
The huge factory laboratory for Fragonard started in Èze in 1968, enjoying a prime location on the hillside overlooking sea views. Today, visitors can take a free guided tour to see the traditional techniques that date back as far as the 8th century, learn about the manufacturing process and if you want to, buy a bottle of scent to take home.
Fragonard Factory is open every day from 9 AM – 6:45 PM and the tours are free, there are set tour times that take place regularly throughout the day.
How to visit Èze
You should know before you go that there are several ways to reach the ancient settlement. While you can always catch the train from Nice to Èze (taking just 15 minutes), there are also several Direct Lignes d’Azur buses, numbers 82 and 1112 (which will take around 30 minutes and is the cheapest option).
Alternatively, you can also walk to Èze! There are stunning coastal paths, like the mentioned trail Nietzsche Path, which connects the settlement to various other towns along the French Riviera.

Where to stay in Èze
Like much of the French Riviera, staying along the beautiful coastline can be costly. Èze is also pretty small so there aren’t a lot of options, that’s why I have suggested one reasonably priced hotel in the village and one in the neighbouring town, Beaulieu-sur-Mer. Here are a couple of suggestions of where to stay (based on web reviews):
Èze – La Perle d’Eze – Aparthotel: In the heart of the village, this hotel offers free Wifi, free parking and there’s a pool to enjoy a dip in. Breakfast (at a surcharge) is served on the balcony, offering stunning vistas over the sea. Check prices and availability here.
Beaulieu Sur Mer – Hôtel Comté de Nice: Just a 4-minute stroll from the town’s train station, this hotel offers free Wifi and rooms with balconies and sea views. Reviews have said the rooms are a little dated, but well-priced, clean and comfortable. Check prices and availability here.
